Composite vs. Wood Decking: Which Is Right for Your Smoky Mountain Home?

Once you've decided to build a deck, the next big choice is what to build it out of. Composite and wood each have real strengths, and the right answer depends on your budget, how you'll use the deck, and how much maintenance you're willing to do — which matters a lot in our humid mountain climate.

Up-front cost

Wood wins on initial price. Pressure-treated pine is the most affordable decking, and cedar sits in the middle. Composite and PVC cost more to install up front. If your budget is tight or you want to build bigger now, wood lets you stretch it further.

Maintenance and lifespan

This is where composite pulls ahead, especially here. Wood decks need regular cleaning and resealing — every two to three years in our humid, rainy, shaded conditions — or they gray, mildew, and eventually rot. Composite never needs staining or sealing; an occasional wash is it, and it lasts decades looking good. Over the full life of the deck, composite often costs less once you factor in the maintenance you're not doing.

The rental factor

For rental cabins, composite is usually the clear winner. Rental decks see constant guest traffic and no one on site to maintain them, so a low-maintenance surface that stays listing-ready protects your booking income. The higher up-front cost pays back quickly in saved upkeep.

Look and feel

Some homeowners simply love real wood — its warmth and natural fit with a mountain setting are hard to beat, and modern stains look beautiful. Today's composite, though, comes in rich, realistic wood-grain colors that look genuinely great. It comes down to whether you prioritize the natural material or the zero-maintenance performance.

Our honest take

We build both and won't push the pricier option. Wood is often right for a tighter budget or a homeowner who loves the natural look and doesn't mind upkeep; composite tends to win for rentals and anyone wanting maintenance-free longevity. Ask us and we'll help you choose for your project.
